The session began with an energetic floor warm-up led by the centre’s staff, before the children were organised into groups. They then rotated around different activities, including balancing on beams, working with hoops, practising their jumps, and diving into the foam pit.

Led by Mr Cole, the choir performed their own original song. The children sang beautifully and represented the school with pride throughout the event.

Their performance, along with their engagement and actions during the service, received high praise from Jane Sheat, Director of Education for St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Throughout the morning, the children took part in a range of hands-on activities that gave them a taste of daily life in Ancient Greece. They made jewellery and mosaics, practised carving, created clay offerings for the gods, wrote on wax tablets, explored ancient medicines and had a go at pot making. The children approached each activity with great enthusiasm and curiosity.

In the afternoon, we held our very own festival of plays, inspired by the theatre festivals of Ancient Athens. The children enjoyed a small feast of bread, cheese and grapes, along with “wine” (squash), while watching a series of performances including two tragedies, a dance and finishing with a comedy.

It was a fantastic day and the children threw themselves into every part of the experience. The activities brought our learning about Ancient Greece to life and created a memorable day for everyone involved.

Memma lit a fire and cooked some fish, which a few of the children tried. She taught them about foraging for food, and the children were then able to try on some ‘Stone Age attire’. They had a great day and were so enthusiastic, asking lots of great questions. They really got stuck into all of the Stone Age activities too.

They began with an informative tour of the burial site, learning all about its fascinating history. Everyone enjoyed climbing to the top of the viewing tower to take in the brilliant views over the mounds and across to Woodbridge and the River Deben.

Afterwards, the children explored the museum and exhibits, trying on Anglo-Saxon clothing and marvelling at the incredible craftsmanship of the artefacts on display. Following a well-earned lunch, they set off on a rune trail through the woods, which was the perfect way to end the day.

Our National Trust guide praised the group, describing the children as “impeccably behaved” and “a credit to the school.”

It was a brilliant trip, and the knowledge and inspiration the children have gained will be a wonderful foundation for their upcoming Anglo-Saxon learning after half term.
