Teaching of Phonics and Reading

At Norton CEVC Primary School, we are committed to developing confident, fluent readers who enjoy reading for pleasure and learning. We use a wide range of high-quality texts and reading materials to support children's reading development.

Our phonics programme for EYFS and Year 1 is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a systematic and synthetic phonics programme validated by the Department for Education. Children are taught phonics daily through engaging, structured lessons that help them develop the knowledge and skills needed to become successful readers and writers.

Children read books that are closely matched to the phonics they have been taught, enabling them to practise and apply their learning with confidence. Regular reading practice sessions in school support the development of fluency, accuracy and comprehension. Children also take home carefully matched reading books, alongside high-quality sharing books to foster a love of reading.

As children become fluent readers, they access a broad range of appropriately challenging texts and quality literature. Reading is taught throughout the curriculum, and the National Curriculum programmes of study are used to support reading development across all year groups.
