Intent
At Norton Primary School, our aim is for children to develop skills within listening, singing, composing and performing. Children develop a respect of different music traditions in a range of cultures, genres and eras. They are encouraged to evaluate and appraise a variety of music and use this to create their own compositions. This gives children the opportunity and belief in their music ability, in which they can build on in KS3.
Implementation
Mr. Cole delivers the music curriculum at Norton Primary School. Year Five receive instrumental tuition and are taught the clarinet with Mr. Kershaw.
Creativity is key to our approach in music. Our long term overview highlights how class topics and musical skills are linked throughout our school. The skills of listening, singing, composing and performing are carefully considered for progression across each key stage. When developing compositional skills, music technology opportunities give students a useful and motivating tool for arranging music. Pupils learn independent skills that provide a good basis for future learning as they continue their musical journeys.
Skills are further encouraged and developed through:
*Our weekly singing assemblies
*Weekly choir sessions and performances throughout the school year
*Ukulele club
*Clarinet performances and 'carry on' sessions
