Welcome to Galaxy Class!
This term our topic is...
We are continuing with our seaside topic this half term, with a geography questions. Our key learning question is ’How does the beach at Felixstowe look different to a beach in Australia?'
Here is some useful information about the things we do in Year One.
Each child will have their own ‘reading rainbow’ on a display in the classroom. Each rainbow has space for 30 stickers, every time you read at home with your child please write in their diary as this will mean they can put a sticker on their rainbow! When the rainbow is full with 30 stickers, they will receive treasure from the box and a reading rainbow certificate! We do this to encourage reading at home every night, reading for 10 minutes a night is best.
We will have a weekly spelling test on a Friday morning. Your child will have a yellow spelling book which will have the spellings for the term stuck inside. Please practice these each week with your child at home (not in the yellow spelling book though as this will be where the test takes place.) Make sure the yellow book is in your child’s book bag every Friday so they can complete their spelling test inside.
Each week your child will read a new Read Write Inc book as part of their weekly phonics and guided reading teaching. Your child will bring home this book during the week alongside their normal reading book to read with you at home; the aim of this is to build their confidence as they are familiar with the text and help build their fluency. Mrs Overy will change this book weekly, so please make sure it stays in book bags. Each time you read the Read write Inc book at home make sure to record it in their reading diary.
During the term I will start to send home ‘Maths Home learning’; this may be an activity to do at home together, a task stuck in their maths home learning books (these will be sent home when appropriate) or a pack I have made up on a specific area of maths. The aim of this is to complete the home learning together and for it to be fun! Some weeks I will send home Phonics or Literacy games instead of Maths. Your child will also bring home a half termly topic based home learning sheet too.
PE is on a Monday and Friday. Please make sure your child has a labelled PE kit in school and has the appropriate clothing for outdoor and indoor PE.
A key form of communication in Year One is through Class Dojo; I will often post updates, key dates, photographs or information you need to be aware of. If you used class dojo with Star Class you will not need a new login as your child’s account will be transferred across to Year One. If you are not part of Class Dojo yet I will be sending out a new login.
Any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
I hope you had a lovely summer,
