Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Today we have been off timetable as a school and been acting under our global citizens curriculum driver, exploring UN World Water Day.
In Year 6 we have explored water as peace and why water causes conflict.
The children had the autonomy to create their own response to this global issues after doing some research this morning; some of the end results that are being shared in a whole school assembly are: posters, protest boards, poems, artwork and the creation of new laws.
Year 4 went to Colchester Castle as part of their Roman's topic. We looked around the fascinating museum, had a tour underneath the castle (whilst learning about Boudicca's attack on Colchester) and built a Roman villa and round house. What a fantastic day!
On Wednesday 14th February, Comet Class went to Cambridge to visit both the Egyptian Gallery at the Fitzwilliam Museum and Central Mosque.
The children spent the morning at the museum, looking at how to decipher an Ancient Egyptian object and thinking about what the artefact could tell them of what life was like for ancient Egyptian people. The class also looked at coffins and items from Egyptian peoples' tombs. After lunch the class travelled across the city to Central Mosque, where the children had the opportunity to learn about Islamic prayer, ask questions and have a guided tour of the mosque.
Everyone enjoyed the day and it was great to hear the children sharing knowledge and applying facts and information.
On Thursday 15 February we had our first class trip to Lodge Farm. The children absolutely loved this trip! They learnt about different grains and how they are used, how they are planted and cared for. They all saw tractors and were even able to sit inside them! We had a tractor trailer ride and went on a green treasure hunt! We saw some sheep from a distance, but they didn’t want to come and say hello. The children accepted this without fault and respected the space they need to give to animals. Overall, it was an incredible trip for them all.
This week we have introduced the Zones of Regulation. Each class will be doing work on the zones in their PSHE lesson to help them understand their emotions. There is a display in each classroom which children will be using to reflect on how they are feeling. For more information please see the Zones of Regulation page on the school website.
Today we relaunched TT Rock Stars and Numbots -both great mathematical apps. The children in EYFS and Year 1 dressed as a numbot robot and years 2 - 6 came dressed as rock stars! All the children had great fun exploring the apps and learning more about how they can use them at home.
History off the Page came into school to support our learning of the Ancient Greeks.
We started the day with a selection of craft activities, such as pottery painting, soap carving, wax melting and making clay offerings for the Gods.
In the afternoon we had a feast and entertainment- dancing and acting out traditional Greek myths!
24 of the Year 6 children enjoyed a three day residential at Bawdsey PGL. The children took part in a variety of risk-taking, team building, fun activities. All the children challenged themselves to try something new and worked as a team to complete activities.
Over the last year, we have been working towards the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM), which is an award scheme to develop and celebrate the quality of science teaching and learning in primary schools. We knew that science was already a strong subject at Norton, so decided to apply for the Gilt award. Thanks to all the efforts of pupils, parents, teaching staff and governors, we received confirmation earlier this term that we had been successful. Well done to us!
This morning, Comet and Rocket class went to Norton to Baptist church to celebrate Harvest Festival. The children delivered their lines beautifully and sang their hearts out!
We learned more about the Rural Coffee Caravan, the charity that the Y6 worship team chose to support this year.
